Become a member At the end of the 16th century, the city of Novosibirsk was founded on the site of a colony of Russian immigrants. It is located on the left bank of the Ob River. Novonikolaevsk was the name of the city before the revolution. Currently, it is the largest city in Siberia, with more than a million inhabitants. This gives reason to call it the capital of Siberia.
Anyone who wants to get to know Siberia and its parts better should visit this city.
It was originally Novosibirsk Akademgorodok, established in 1957. No one had ever heard of this place at that time. "Silicon Valley" is how this city is recognized now. A large number of research institutes and educational centers are located next to the residential complex. Along with higher education institutions, there were schools for particularly gifted children who came from all over the Soviet Union. Over time, the importance of Akademgorodok has been lost, but at the moment there is a revival.
The Opera House is rightfully considered a symbol of culture in Novosibirsk. The opening took place only after the war, although it was built before the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. This played a positive role: exhibits from Moscow and Leningrad museums, which were urgently evacuated in 1941, were preserved.
Another attraction is the Novosibirsk Philharmonic. The creation was carried out using the "national construction" method. This method includes the possibility of raising funds by selling special postcards with a model of the future building. The cost of such a postcard is the price of one brick, from which the philharmonic hall will be built. Nowadays, such postcards are truly a rarity that many collectors are after.
A place that also needs to be visited is the Novosibirsk Zoo, because there is a large collection of animals there. It was here that the hybrid offspring was obtained in the form of a combination of a tiger and a lion. The name is licorice. This experiment has attracted a lot of attention from scientists and ordinary zoo visitors. Such cases are absolutely rare (only 2%).
The Novosibirsk Zoo is home to about 11 thousand individuals of 756 species of animals. More than 350 species are listed in the International Red Book and more than 180 species are listed in the Red Book of Russia.
There are endless places to visit in Novosibirsk. It is better to come to this big and serious city yourself and get to know both the city and its inhabitants personally.
