Moxibustion refers to one of the 6 methods of external therapy in Tibetan medicine (bloodletting, moxibustion, acupuncture, Cu-Nye massage, acupressure and balneology).
Moxibustion is a widespread form of treatment in the East, it is one of the oldest types of therapy in the world, widely practiced in Chinese medicine. According to Chogyal Namkai Norb and other researchers of Tibetan history and culture, moxibustion was used in the ancient kingdom of Shang Shung, the predecessor of the Tibetan state that existed more than 4,000 years ago and it was from there that it was introduced into Chinese and Tibetan medicine. In the documents of the 9th century, found during excavations at the Dunhuang Monastery in China, there is evidence that as early as the 8th century AD, Tibetan kings invited doctors from Shang Shung to develop medical science and, in particular, moxibustion therapy. To date, more than 500 important points for moxibustion on the human body have been described, which are associated with certain organs. Moxa (originally called medsa, which in the language of the kingdom of Shang Shung meant "cauterization of dots on the skin")– one of the most effective remedies in the treatment of a huge number of diseases. Methods of moxibustion vary depending on the disease. In the most severe therapy, this is cauterization to a burn. This method is rarely used nowadays for aesthetic reasons (burn spots), but it is very effective in the treatment of various tumors, reducing very high blood pressure. There is also warming up, temperature rise, etc., a "warning", in which a short-term increase in temperature is signaled to the organ. The latter method is used in the treatment of children, the elderly, and pregnant women. Mox moxibustion treatment is not a fast process. According to doctors of Tibetan medicine, the therapeutic effect of the procedure occurs on the 2nd-3rd day. During treatment, heat activates nerve endings, penetrates to organs, dilates blood vessels, resulting in an active release of toxins from the body. Indications for moxa: diseases of a "cold nature" associated with mucus and wind disorders (disorders of the nervous system), colds (acute respiratory infections, ARVI), influenza, sore throat and pneumonia; digestive diseases, stomach and duodenal ulcers, chronic diseases of the digestive system, respiratory system, bones and also various skin diseases.
