Bullous-ureteral reflux disease in children

In some children, the valves do not function properly or are not built correctly. Urine returns to the ureters, and in some cases, to the kidneys. This pathology is called vesicoureteral reflux (outflow). Five stages of reflux are distinguished depending on the segment of the urinary tract that reaches the receding urine. The severity of the disease is important when choosing a treatment method.

A child with vesicoureteral reflux is prone to relapse of urinary tract infections. It often happens that recurring infections suspect this abnormality and prompt the pediatrician to order a urine imaging (USG). Reflux does not produce specific symptoms, such as pain or vomiting, only symptoms specific to urinary tract infections. They should not be underestimated, as the result of unrecognized or poorly processed reflux, especially of a high degree, can be irreversible damage to the kidneys.

In addition to ultrasound, cystography during urination, i.e. an X-ray examination of a bladder filled with a contrast medium (contrast), is very important in the diagnosis of reflux. The radiologist conducting the examination sees the function of the ureters and the bladder on the monitor screen and on this basis estimates the degree of outflow.

Treatment for reflux consists in the prolonged use of disinfecting drugs, monitoring the effectiveness of the treatment (ultrasound or cystography, general examination and urine culture), avoiding behavior that increases the risk of acute urinary tract infections (colds, poor hygiene of the perineum).

A child with vesicoureteral reflux should urinate in two stages. After urinating on a pot or toilet, he should “squeeze” his next portion under pressure. Thus, the bladder is also emptied of urine, which was previously in the ureters. This is important because residual urine is an excellent breeding ground for bacteria.

After about a year of conservative treatment, monitoring of the course of treatment (ultrasound, cystography) is carried out. In some children with "low" reflux, this disease is diagnosed. This is due to the "maturation" of the vesicoureteral releases, which occurs with the growth of the child.

Surgical treatment of vesicoureteral reflux is necessary only if the outflow is "high" - reaches the kidneys, there is no tendency to disappear and there are signs of damage to the renal parenchyma. SOURCES: Ghana news - Top stories
